The Government of India after having recognized the need of systematic research for development of Indian Systems of Medicine including Homoeopathy in the Country, established the Central Council for Research in Indian Medicine and Homoeopathy in 1969 as an autonomous body under the Ministry of Health & family welfare, Govt. of India which continued to conduct scientific research in Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy upto 1978. During all this period Naturopathy was looked after by the Ministry of Health & family Welfare directly. Thereafter, in March 1978, this composite Council was dissolved to pave way for the formation of independent Research Councils i.e. one each for Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy.
The Central Council for Research in Yoga & Naturopathy was established as Registered Society on 30th March, 1978 with the Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare as President of Governing Body. It is functioning as an autonomous organization under the newly created Ministry of AYUSH, Govt. of India and fully funded by the Ministry for all its activities. Since inception, the Council is involved in various activities related to the development of these systems in terms of Research, Education, Training and Propagation.

The University Medical Graduate Degree Course Programme Bachelor of Naturopathy and Yoga Science (BNYS) is a degree course programme in India in the field of AYUSH Medicine, which covers the study of Naturopathy Medicine, (Therapeutic Yoga Medicine). BNYS Degree Course Programme qualified persons who can be a Medical Officer with " A Class Medical Registration " can do Medical Practice as a General Physician and can do Primary Health Care Practice in Modern Medicine as well as Speciality in Naturopathy Medicine and can do Integrative Medicine Practice as both combined where ever is required . BNYS Medical Graduates can continue studies at Post Graduate Courses of DPM.,(Psychiatry).,DGO.,(Obstetrics & Gyenocology),DCP.,(Pathology),etc two year course and same subject speciality in MD, 3 year Course MD.,(Nutritional Medicine),MD.,(Dietetic Medicine),MD.,(Physical Medicine),MD.,(Osteopathy Medicine) MD.,(Public Health) MD (Hospital Management) MD (O&G),MD.,(Chiropractic Medicine),MD.,Naturopathy Medicine., MD.,(Preventive Medicine)., MD.,(Biochemistry). MD.,(Microbiology).,MD.,(Epidemiology).,MD.,(Pathology)., MD.,(Aesthetic Medicine) MD.,(Reproductive Medicine) pg level and Post PGs Course too available in many Colleges and Health Science Universities in both private as well as government sectors as PG diploma duration is two years and PG degree duration is 3 years.

The curriculum is taught in English with additional language to it as Sanskrit too by several universities. The degree is of four-year and six-month +one year CRRI AS 365 days full-time internship CRRI DURATION as including 1-year internship, after passing 12th Science are eligible to pursue admission to this graduate course. The person having a BNYS naturopathy degree graduates can practice independently naturopathy. Naturopathy colleges are available in almost all states in India both in private as well as Government sectors.

BNYS graduates in most states in India are allowed to practice modern medicine because they study emergency medicine as one of the subjects. BNYS is recognised abroad for any form of modern medicine health provision. In India, the degree is recognised for naturopathic practice, a form of alternative medicine.

As per current laws, BNYS graduates are permitted for usage of prefix ‘Dr’, like graduates of MBBS, PhD, PharmD or other doctorate level degrees.

Current governing bodies are, National Institute of Naturopathy, Puneand Central council of Research in Yoga and Naturopathy (CCRYN), AYUSH Ministry,Government of India. The graduates are registered Naturopaths under the central registration offered by CCRYN as well as state AYUSH councils/boards
